Roland Cone for DIY Trigger, what model works best?

I checked at the local music store and they can get me roland replacement cones, but said different model drums have different cones. I am using 35 mm piezo's with a DIY mesh head and wonder what model would work best.

10" and 12" drums

Any suggestions?

AS far as I know, there's only one type of cone: Sensor Cushion part # 01909478

I believe Roland use the same cones in their 10" and 12" drums I got some from UFO drums and have had no issues (in my in both 10" and 12" toms).

Thanks for the info, I ordered the cones for the 12 inch drum from roland. They don't want to sell you more than 2 but I talked them into sending me 4. They are too expensive for what they are, but if it gets me a little more consistency it will be well worth it.

I have to say after using and playing the Pintech triggers that they are identical to the Roland Cones as far as performance goes. So to answer your original question, I think if you buy the Roland or the Pintech you will be fine. Good Luck with your drum project, Tom

If you are going DIY the Poron Very Soft foam works excellent. Looks like you have already gotten an order in for Roland cones. Those of course are excellent. But for those that don't mind putting a little time in to build their own Bogies cone cutter jig is the ticket:

I did all my foam using Bogie's cone cutter and the Poron foam for my most recent kit in the attached pic and it triggers as well as anything I've ever built. I'm so pleased with my kit with the new TDW-20 expansion boards I'm getting lines on my face from smiling too much...

Bogie sometimes has extra foam cones at times also... you could ask if he has any.

Foam Castles AKA Devo Hats also work quite well.

Yes, any of the suggestions above will work fine for the Trigger Io.

Foam density, shape and the height of trigger foam above the bearing edge all play a part in trigger response. I could take 5 identical drums with 5 identical heads and 5 identical trigger foams and get identical or nearly identical response with the foam set at the same height. Change the height of the foam above the edge and the response will change. Change the density of the foam and the trigger response changes. The shape will change the response some too. That's just one element of the build and one reason you see statements like, "your results may vary".
A solid platform with the piezo and foam mounted correctly are the most important ingredients in the recipe IMO...
