  • New DIY build - a few questions...

Hello to all. This is my first post on here, but I've been reading for a couple of weeks.

First of all, I'd like to thank you all for the wealth of knowledge you share, as it has encouraged me to go down the DIY route. I've built guitars and basses in the past so I think I'm up for the challenge of building my own kit.

Right, I have a few questions, but first I'd like to let you know what I have planned.

My DIY kit will be based around an Alesis Trigger IO, triggering BFD and EZ Drummer (not simultaniously ). For the snare drum I've ordered a 12"x10" tom from www.thomann.de which will be cut in half to make two drums (I'll use the other half for the floor tom), and for two rack toms I've ordered a 10"x9" tom which will also be cut in half. I've also ordered a second 10" tom which I intend to use as my kick drum. All drums will have TDRUM mesh heads on them and the plan is to make the snare and toms dual zone. I haven't decided what I'm going to do about cymbals or a drum rack just yet - I'll come to that at a later stage.

So here is my first question: How should I go about mounting the second 10" tom as a kick drum. Firstly, I was thinking of cutting the drum in half like all the others, which will give me another shell to use if I ever want to add another drum. So with that done, I was looking for a few ideas on how to go about mounting it. I'd like to incorporate some way of using the rim clamp on my pedal to secure [the pedal], like with a regular kick drum. Any ideas?

    Dan

Cheers for that Bogiesbad, that's given me some ideas. What diameter is that kick drum of yours?

My kicks are 12" but I'm sure that set up will work for any size depending on the ISS mount...the Pearl ISS come in different sizes...8-10, 12-14, 16 and 18 I believe. It's a shame the Quadraspurs are no longer made as they work great and look sharp.
