    Where to buy PVC sheet adhesive

    OK, I've finally found my answer as to what product appears to be preferred.

    Double Sided Clear Acrylic Tape "Killer Red Tape"

    But haven't found someplace reasonable to purchase it from.

    Very expensive at $36.70 shipped for a single 1" x 36 yard roll. Stupid shipping is $15 for a single roll of tape. That really burns me. Anyway, I'm assuming that's probably enough to stick PVC sheeting to 6-10 cymbals depending on their size.

    Someone else found this seller. Looks to be the same product, no difference in the price, and they only appear to offer the 1/2" roll which means twice the labor to apply the tape. Didn't check shipping. http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=411&

    This doesn't appear to be a particularly unique product. There must be some Home Depot / hardware / auto store product readily available. Right...?

    For the record it would surely be easier for all of us noobs if there were stickies clearly documenting the products and most accessible/affordable sources. Electronics and hardware is plenty easy, it's actually the ancillary stuff like the sound dampening that's the hardest to source.

    Semi-related surely some spray adhesive that would be more cost effective and easier, not to mention MUCH FASTER, to apply assuming it offered acceptable bonding performance. Add in the cost of the PVC and expensive tape a DYI brass cymbal gets very pricey quickly. And that's before you even stick a single zone of electronics to it.

    But after reading a lengthy spray adhesive thread http://www.vdrums.com/forum/showthre...hesive+loctite I'm discouraged to waste more time and money and product re-hashing that. But my neighbor is a Locktite salesman so I can theoretically try any of their adhesives.

    But I'm assuming if JMan decided expensive tape is the way to go then that's the way to go. Really it's not THAT expensive when you cut the price of the PVC and tape across a load of cymbals. But when you're ordering $100 worth of PVC and tape, plus a cymbal pack, plus the electronics, and then having to invest the labor it starts making some inexpensive Yamaha or Roland cymbals more attractive.

    But onwards I go! WOOT! I have a cheap little 5 piece kit with 14 metal snare, 13/14/16 toms, 14" hat set, another 14" hat set I've split and set on two cymbal booms, and then two 16" crash/rides to convert. So that's 5 drums, 4 cymbals, plus the hat. Should be a fun project. I'll document everything with pictures and way too much text (this page is a great example of my diarrhea of the keyboard) and start my own thread.

      As far as spray adhesives, I have never found one to date that works well. I've tried all the variables of the 3M spray line plus a couple other things. I even thought I had a good bond several times..... then with time, and usually hot weather.... sagging would begin. I've tried other types of tape too.... I don't particularly like paying $20+ a roll for the Killer Red... But it is the only product that has worked for me.

        Gracias, amigo! I'm going to assume you use the 1" instead of 2" based on the $20 price you mentioned. Is there some particular reason for choosing the 1" over 2"? Easier to apply would be my guess.

        While I'm at it if there's some specific instructions or tips for applying the tape and PVC sheeting I would greatly appreciate them. The spray adhesive sounded nice and easy. Spray, it doesn't get totally bonded for a bit so you can smooth/move the PVC. The tape sounds terribly permanent without much room for error.

          I've used both 1" and 2". I will be going back to 1" soon.... I am reordering again. The 2" is a much bigger pain to apply.

          Main advice, just go slow and get things lined up before applying. It is probably easier to apply the tape to the cymbal first, then the PVC to the tape, but either way will work. I always cut the PVC larger than the cymbal and trim edge and bell area after. And yes, get it right the first time, it is no picnic trying to remove this stuff.

          Oh, and one more thing. The PVC has been rolled so it is easiest and works better to go WITH the curve of the material. The vinyl will be bowed a little and that bow is similar to the bow/cupped inside of your cymbal. That helps to keep the vinyl adhered as it is natural, and not trying to push away from the cymbal.

            Good stuff! Confirms my assumptions.

            SpeedPress doesn't provide online shipping but hopefully they don't want to bang me $15 to ship a single roll of tape. I'll find out tomorrow.

              Is double sided tape the only thing needed? I saw photos of cymbals and they seem to have the cymbal, then the double side tape, then a layer of transparent thing. What is that transparent thing and where to buy it? (local shops if possible)

                $7.63 to ship a single roll of 1" tape from SpeedPress in CA to me in NC. Still seemingly more than it should be but much less than $15. Hopefully one roll will cover all my cymbals.

                  That's not bad, I live pretty close. Still takes me about a gal. of gas to pick it up myself .... so just to drive over and pick it up is over $4.00 right now. plus I pay tax since I'm local...

                    McMaster shipped me about 40lbs of PVC and what not for $10. Just to put shipping a roll of tape into perspective. But $7 is better than $15.

                      Yeah, but McMaster-Carr is the exception IMO, not the rule. They are super reasonable on their shipping charges, and faster than anyone I have ever ordered from. I get my orders the following day from them.

                        This tape is some serious stuff! One roll got me through four 14" and two 16" cymbals with a small amount to spare, maybe enough to do one more cymbal. Though I'm sure Murphy's Law would come into play and I'd be 3 strips of tape short when I got to the end of that seventh cymbal. It's just the way things always work out for me. Heh. I was fully expecting to run out on my sixth cymbal but damnit, I beat Murphy this time! WOOT!

                        So in conclusion not too bad price wise I guess when broken out per cymbal.
