  • Best mesh heads 2023

I’m converting a shiny new snare I picked up for a bargain on eBay, what’s considered to be the stand out best mesh head to use.

I used Zed triple ply previously and found them ok.
A2E dirt cheap 5 piece kit with Jobeky dual triggers.
A2E Millenium low volume cymbals (cheap triggers off eBay crash 16”/18”, 14” hi-hat ) goeydrum 3 zone kit on 20” ride, goeydrum hi-hat controller
    TD17 module.

I use drum-tec triple ply and they feel very acoustic like. They are louder than two ply. I haven’t done any side by side with other mesh heads but these are nice to me.

There's a thread over on the eDRUMin website about switching from Real Feel to Roland PowerPly MH14

It says its for the KD-140 kick but the poster says its the one he's using for his snare and that the positional sensing is way improved with it.

            SpareDrum 3-ply 😉

Same manufacturing as drum-tec real feel but less expensive. We only use these for all of our drums.

*there is a comparison video on youtube of both. I think it was from theedrumworkshop.

If using the edrumin the 2 ply Roland has been better for positional sensing than the drum-tec. The drum-tec does feel real though so as with everything there is a tradeoff. Positional sensing was still good with the drumtec but definitely better with the Roland. I believe hot spot suppression is also working better.

Yes, I'm using both, Sparedrum 3-ply and Drum-tec Real Feel, can't feel and see any difference, except in my wallet .

I see you can get these in the uk at Bax. £23 for a 13” 3 ply as opposed to £39 for a drum-tec real feel.
Roland TD50x with part td20 rack and pads. SD3 with various kits. Pearl Masters Kit, Yamaha 9000RC original natural wood finish. Cymbals from Zildgian Pasite and Sabian. Loads of percussion bits. Cubase and Wavelab always current versions. RME Babyface pro fs audio interface

I really like goedrum heads for my toms. I think its two ply, maybe one ply but they are thick and dead feeling. Trigger well with the edrumin though.

Have you compared with drum tec real feel or other 3-ply?

Drum tec has the ”pro” version which feels amazing, feels much better than the reel feel. However it’s really loud. Like semi acoustic. It’s a thick, heavy one ply that feels kind of waxy to the touch.

I really liked the Goedrum heads. They're single ply but a very thick weave. Felt great, especially the kick drum. The only downside was they turned yellow over time particularly near a window (UV from the sun).

It's loud AND transparant, that's not what I prefer.

I've used drumtec real feel, Roland 2 ply and go edrum and a black hart head. The drum tec feels and triggers nice on the snare using the edrumin. The Roland feels a little more bouncy on the snare but triggers really well with her edrumin so I just switched to that for my snare. I love the goedrum ones for toms. I don't need PS and they are definitely sensitive enough, and the feel great. They are a bit loud but not too loud at all for my basement drum room. In fact I think they sound pretty good with regular resonant heads on my vintage tama imperialstar. I can't speak for the new pro drumtec version but they sound similar to goedrums although goedrum are not at all transparent.
