  • Post search function questions...

I'm ready to begin my diy journey. I have a rhythm traveler, two cheap electronic sets (dtxpress4 and alesis dm7x) to pillfer cymbals and sounds, and a radio shack in three directions.

The plan is to buy the initial parts for the snare from the shack, grab a chunk of 1" closed cell foam from work, and a mesh head from somewhere. Then see how it performs, and how hard it is to dial in the settings. I'm guessing the Yamaha will be better, since it's better to begin with.

My questions are 1) will 1" foam be thick enough? I'm ready for the foam to be the wrong type, but the quartz triggers a lot of people use are bigger. And 2) if I use these modules to start, how much trouble will it be to get a Roland module to work with this set up when I can finally afford one? I don't intendto updatethe High hat till the module, so I'm only concerned with the drums. , and whatever cymbals I add.

Ok, so lack of response told me that I should search some more. The search function here seems useless, so I just went back five pages in diy, and read some random threads. Eventually I found my answers.

I ended up with the quartz triggers, so I've built the two toms, but the 14 inch is intermittently triggering. It didn't work at first, so I consulted the diagram. I had it right, but the tom didn't work till I unplugged it, then it went out again. The connector going into the trs looks loose ( shortest tab), is it possible that the weld is broken? How can I check? Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for all the replies, it really made this easy. Um.... Well anyway, does anyone make their own heads? I tried with Window screen, but they suck. Even when you get them right. I've seen a few people using mesh, but I can't find where they Hey it. I'm hoping to try Michaels or jo Anne fabrics today, because Walmart didn't have any mesh in the material section.

Your setup looks good. Keep going.
I am not a diy guy but I have read that a piezo's polarity can be manufactured in reverse so the diagrams are not always correct. If it don't work right try switching the wires.
Good luck with the screen stuff. I never liked the resulting looks of it in the pictures I have seen.

It was actually a problem with the head. I had sewn the layers unevenly, so there was a ripple eating up my vibrations. It would be easier to buy heads I think, is not easy to get them even.

So you have to be a DIY'er and a seamstress / drummer to make it work! LOL
Hmmmm, Ever try very tight denim as a head?
The sound of smacking my lady's butt in tight jeans sounds pretty good!! LMAO!
But, seriously good luck with your build.
