  • Strange Setup

A couple nights ago I went to a club to hear my niece singing in her blues band. Anyhow, this was their first gig with a new drummer... and I was kind of curious about his kit. I asked if he had troubles playing with the toms mounted backwards, and he attempted to explain it by saying that he used to play a left-hand set up but recently changed to THIS configuration after being derided too much by other drummers. Personally, I think he was just trying to discourage "Hey dude, can I sit in for a couple tunes?" requests.

I think "Hey, whatever's comfortable", but it's kind of an odd arrangement, don't you think?

Ok, he's done it too: mounted the toms in reverse order. I'm gonna have to give that a try and see what the attraction is. Hmmm... how can that be done with the Vs..... hmmm... I suppose I could just swap two cables coming into the brain.... nah, its gotta be tougher than that, doesn't it?

Kenny Aronoff and Mick Fleetwood both had a similar setup...

I can't speak for them of course, but some guys like their toms placed relatively low to the ground and in a "normal" setup there may not be enough room for the bigger tom to be placed above the bass drum...but they can fit a small tom over the bass drum and put the bigger tom to the left (I actually tried that a while back w/ some of my A's)...or they just want to be different
        E-drums: TD-20, RT-5S triggers on snare/toms, KD-7s, VH12, CY-14Cs, CY-15R, Pintech splash.
A-drums: Zickos (amber) w/ all Zildjians.

Bruford says he does it to keep from playing the stale old descending tom fill. It keeps things fresh and keeps him on his toes. For a while I set up one of my ekits with the toms out of order. It definitely makes things interesting.
