Refinishing my 70's Pearl kit..

I still have the old japan pearl kit I bought when I was a kid in the seventies. I don't know anything about the woods but they have always sounded good. They had a blue oyster wrap on them that shattered over the years and now I have removed the wrap and would like to put a slick paint job on them but need some instructions on prep and paints. Any help or known websites would be appreciated.
