  • bass drum speed

I played a friend's kit recently who's kick drum was completely packed with blankets and pillows. Though the sound was completly dead, I was doing really fast double bass stuff, like slipknot or fear factory fast. Though I like a low bass drum sound, will putting muffling against the batter head rather than just the resonant head of my kick increase speed, or will tightening the tension on the head bring it up?

A tight drumhead may cause too much rebound and may play uncomfortably. With a dead sound your hear the attack better so perhaps it can help you to control your playing.

But: sometimes you will have to switch to a real (not dead) sounding kit...
