Best Mesh Heads for Acoustic Use Only

Hello. I am looking for a mesh drum head for my acoustic set that will give the best acoustic performance. I am not using the heads for electronic set up. I live in a townhouse and have concrete wall between myself and my neighbor but the acoustic is a bit too loud so I am trying to lower the volume by purchasing mesh heads. I bought silent strokes but they do not give very accurate feedback and the tone is not great. Also they are not loud enough. The worst part is how bouncy the bass drum is, It is almost unusable. Any suggestions as far as one ply, two ply, three ply, or what brand? Thanks.

is it a double concrete wall ? you could try double ply mesh (drum-tec design) or 3 ply (louder, drum-tec real feel) then with normal bottom heads
on toms, you'll still have some tone.. ..i'd try to stay below 60 dB .. cymbal/ hh pads? will be slightly louder than this.. another option could be

I'm in a townhouse as well and besides the electronics I also have a kit with RTOM black holes and L80 cymbals. You still get the tone but at a much lower volume. Yes, they are expensive though but I think best in the long run. The only issue is the bass drum. I don't like the way the RTOM hooks to it, double pedal moved too much on me, and I didn't like the way the beater hit. I have a Billy Blast 3 ply for the electronics and just use that without a trigger for the black holes.. You can also stuff a bass drum with pillows and blankets and keep the mylar head.

According to many Reviews the drumtec Pro Heads are incredibly realistic to Play, but have the disadvantages of being louder than other mesh heads (which you might want) and not be soooo good for Triggering, which is also ok in this case.

I'll add another vote for drum-tec's Real Feel heads. They really do feel close to mylar, IMO.

I've also used the Remo SilentStrokes, which have the advantage of being cheap, widely available, & a little quieter than 2- or 3-ply heads, but they are also springier.

I've also tried the RTOM Black Holes, which many people swear by, but I didn't really like. Feel is not great and volume reduction is only so-so, IMO (but volume is so subjective and everyone is looking for a different level of reduction, so they might be perfect for you). I will second the advice to avoid the bass drum by them at all costs, it feels horrible & affects pedal position far too much. The RTOMs on the snare sound really nasty, too, I think.

I've also tried the Aquarian SuperPads on both snare and kick, both are pretty good - you get good activation of snare wires & decent low-end oomph from the kick at reasonable volumes, the only real downside is pedal travel is slightly reduced because of the thickness of the bad over the kick drum batter head.

In the end, what worked best for me was to use drum-trec Real Feel heads on batter side, Remo SilentStrokes on resonant side, and trigger to a Pearl Mimic Pro. Not a cheap solution, but I can literally practice at 2AM & feel, sound, and ergonomics are all excellent (and realistic).

Been a few years. Has anyone gone from Silent Stroke to 3 ply DrumTec or Jobeky for acoustic, not triggered play? Long story short, low volume cymbals are louder than SilentStroke(d) drums so if 3 ply heads "keep" more air... maybe more volume output too?
