  • x hats / remote hi hats - any users?

    Hi everyone,
I have had two sets of hi hats for ages now (new beat and quick beats) and am thinking of having them both in my acoustic set up. I don't think I would go down the 'remote' route as I don't think the cable would extend right round to where I would mount them. I have used a double set years ago but they were never really used ( different hats though some basic ones from memory!) I think it could really add some versatility into the sound - certainly song wise as both these sets of hats are vastly different in sound!
My question is basically does anyone here use them and what can you recommend stand wise?
The only drummer I know that used them was Boris Williams ex The Cure.
    Cheers!

How far does it need to "extend"? DW makes a 10ft cable. I use the 9502LB and have had no problem with placement on any of my monster kits whether I used it for main hats or aux.

Only as far as my pics in another post! so certainly not 10 feet! I'm not really clued up on them just what I have seen on the net, none of the cables look that long! I will have to delve deeper...! I will check out the 9502LB....do you know if Gibraltar do one similar? I'm kind of starting to like their hardware!

Gibraltar doesn't have a dedicated cable remote but they do have something called the "ultra hat" or something like that. It's a atand that has a cable like extension that allows the top part of the stand to move linear while the legs stay put. Pearl has a remote that is said to work well also and not as expensive as the DW. Also there is something on the internet called "Speedy Hats" I think that seems interesting.

I use a Remote Speedy HH stand on my TD-30 / VH-13 / Pintech ConcertCast EKit and another RS stand on my acoustic gigging kits. I also have the DW remote with an 8 foot cable. Unfortunately, the RS is no longer in production but I've heard rumors about it being brought back.

In my experience, the DW is pretty good but is not quite as smooth or responsive as a top model non-remote HH stand. The Remote Speedy is extremely responsive and smooth and is as good as the best top model non-remote HH stand that I've tried.

I own/have owned a number of HH stands - a top model Gibraltar which I used for many years as my main gigging stand and served me well, an older Gibraltar with double exposed springs, an older Gibraltar remote, a Gibraltar AX aluminum stand, a Pearl, a Rogers Supreme, a few others I can't remember, a Sonor very lightweight stand from the 1960s, a Sonor Protec aluminum stand, and a Sonor 5000 II (sometimes called a Designer Series). I have also used quite a few HH stands from other companies when playing a back line kit. The Sonor 5000 II is easily the best of the bunch in terms of response and smoothness but it is very heavy and not practical for gigging. The RS rivals the 5000 II in terms of performance.

There are newer, top model remote HH stands on the market from Trick and other companies. I will play with them at the upcoming NAMM and see how they compare.

X hats - I use a Gibraltar X hat holder on my large studio kit (permanently set up) and like it a lot. I also have an older DW X hat. I have not used the Yamaha but it looks pretty cool with the thumb wheel tension adjustment.

You will like the DW. I use mine on my large studio kit along side my DW 9002 kick pedal. Enjoy!

Thanks for the info. I really like my DW9502LB but the Speedy Hat looks intriguing. I really wish they put more time into the the aesthetic styling of it though. I hate the way it looks with the exposed cable and pulleys. Hope they address that if they reintroduce it.

Well this was a DW 5000 remote so I'm guessing its pretty old. I have to say I hate this thing! Looks and feels really chunky and although I haven't yet set it up with my kit I don't think it's going to work for me. Open and close isn't particularly smooth either which would become thoroughly annoying. I think this will go on ebay again and I will search for a good x-hat stand!

i had a Yamaha WHS800, and the cable sawed itself off in less than a month.... got into a bit of a "thing" with some TwinkleToe Metal guy who insisted there must have been a kink in the cable somewhere, but the cable shredded about 1.5 inches from the end, at the BASE

basically, you have to be VERY wary of any twist internally in the cable's path, or it ends up rubbing itself to death

easily the worst $500 i ever spent
