I am excited to see what you come up with. We had talked about that ardiuno midi controller early on in this idea, but we decided to keep it as simple as possible. Do you have a schematic on you light circuits, and what are you using to power them?

The brains are from Miduino kit (Tom Scarff) .
http://tomscarff.110mb.com/midi_drum...drums_LEDS.htm
The midi is translated to +5V each ch. and is 35€ (excl. Shipping & Handling)
The left PCB I am using 8 reed relays (5Vdc coil and output = 0.5A/10W MAX.)
The DC Current per I/O Pin of the Atmega168 microcontroller = 40.0 mA. and is so far 33€ for 1 PCB (8Ch.)
Now include the price of another 8ch PCB, power supply and the LED's desired.
So let me make sure I am following this... the PCB on the left with 8 relays- this will power 8 triggers?

The PCB on the right is receiving midi from your module (here Roland, you can use any midi module but different program )
The module on the left will give you the possibility to switch on/off the led(s) and relays to switch more leds. (see the small movie. This might give you a better idea)

Ps: The blue led is the HI-Hat.

Does this mean the answer to my question is "yes"?

So then, the "Elation FLEX CW LED Tape" takes the place of the single LED on the board and is wired to the drum shell? Or would you use that for an indicator light and add the LED tape along with it?

NO, the PCB on the left are relays wich will switch on when you trigger a PAD.
(It is not that easy to explain for me , It might be a language problem from my side )

The single LED is as indicator. (in parrallel with the relays.)
Output of the proceesor only handels 5V. and 40mA. max (each output)

The relays (1-8) wil switch on the 12V. of the FLEX CW Led Tape.

Cool. Can't wait to see it all in action.

8 relays on PCB = One switch for the LED on each trigger = LEDs for 8 triggers?

Yes, If you hit a pad, it will trigger a relay and this one will trigger 12V to LED's so the pad lights up. The PCB does this for the first 8ch. a second PCB will do ch 9 to 16.

So, for the brain, the 8 channel switch PCB times two, LED tape, and asst. parts, we are talking well over $150 USD here. Wow, this is kinda pricey.

Assuming that I could afford to buy this rig, here is what I would want to do: I would have one "switch PCB" for snare/kick/toms, and a second "switch PCB" just for cymbals. I think using the LED tape along the bottom side of the cymbals would look cool... on the "switch PCB" to the cymbals, I would want the the relays to slowly fadeout, similarly to the way a cymbal's sustain does. Does this "fade out" idea for the cymbals seem possible?

I'd gladly pay that if I thought I could put it all together successfully. It seems to perform very well! And the "Eye Candy" is AWESOME! Now if you could just program it to change colors! It would be perfect!

Hey man, that is awesome! I like the led setup! You should start a new thread for this. There are so many posts here that it's hard to follow your work. If you get a chance could you show us how it's all working together? Schematic or something? Or am I just missing that part? Also some closer pictures would be great!

I wish I had pursued the midi setup a little more originally, but we were hell bent on keeping it super simple. I am really digging what you have going though!

Jman
