  • cy-8 question

hi there. as you can see in my sig, i have a 2box. my drum teacher gave to me 3 cymbals. 2 cy-8 and one cy-5. the cy-5 had a cable broken, i fixed that and it works great.
theother 2 cymbals work fine with 2box, but somehow their volume is not so loud. i have set up gain to maximum and still they arent as loud as my other crashes. ok , with maximum gain, it is not such a big difference as before, but it is noticable. do i need to change the piezo? perhaps they are almost dead?
should i change both piezos, or just one in every cymbal? any ideas? anyone done that before? also do you have a link for cheap piezos i could buy? thanx

I don't think it should be necessary to replace the piezo with the same size, and I'm not sure how practical it would be to replace with a larger size.

But in any case, all Roland cymbals only have one piezo; the edge zone (and bell on a ride) only uses a ribbon switch together with the bow piezo.

thank you my friend. why did i think there where2 piezos? id bet my head there where 2 piezos. to be honest, since it is still working, if i cant find the same piezo and be sure it is easy to be fixed, i dont think i will start the process. has anyone done it before? thanx

yes i modded my cy 8. highly recommend) the original piezo is 27 mm which is why it is quieter that the cy 12, 14, 15.
i replaced the 27mm with a 35mm and made a huge difference! it triggers like the other cymbals with better sensitivity and cymbal swells are much better! the cy 12, 14 and 15 come stock with the 35mm piezo.

that is good to know. thank you. 2 more questions. first is how dangerous is to destroy the piezo withen soldering? because thats what i read on the other thread here.
second, are there available, 35mm piezos, that the cables are already soldered on them, so perhaps i just have then to connect the wire on the piezo with the other wire on the cymbal? or i cant find piezos with wires soldered on them? thanx

i buy mine with the wires attached . i bought my last one from quarts triggers on ebay but he doesn't have any listed. just do a search on 35 mm piezo on ebay. theres a guy selling them with wires for 5.00 plus shipping, a little on the high side though.

ok thanx. still if i am to repair the cy-8 for 5 euros, it is fine by me. so the only thing then i have to do , is to connect the 2 wires right?it is as simple as i can think? just twist them and put same tape around them? thank you

i would solder them as i would be afraid of the connection to come loose after playing them a bit, but yes its that easy.
