  • 12" tom cut shell build log

    Hi folks

Im in the middle of building my own custom DIY cut shell kit to go with my TD9 module.

In short, here are pictures to illustrate how I went about this.

I started off by buying a Millenium 12x10" tom from Thomann.

    I chose this because...

    1) Its very cheap, about 30pounds new!
    2) I knew I could easily take off the wrap
    3) Its not a good quality product so I have no problems cutting it in half or binning parts from it
    4) Convertng this is all that this tom is good for!
    5) If I make a mess of it, its ONLY 30pounds wasted!

Here's a photo of it before I took it to pieces.

This tom was actually of a much better quality than the 10" of the same brand that I've cut into 2 shallower toms. Mind you, it couldnt really be any worse because that drum was a sheer disgrace in terms of build quality!

Just to make it clear, I would NEVER EVER even consider using these toms in an acoustic kit!

Here's another with all the hardware off it.

Here's the shell with the wrap off.

Again, you can see the poor workmanship, but perfect for my needs!

The largest hole is the one for the tom mount. I didnt have to do anything to this hole whilst removing the tom mount, this is how it was cut / drilled at the factory!! Shocking!!

here's another of the inside of the shell.

You can clearly see the crappy drilling for the origial lugs.

In this pic, you can see my line for cutting the shell in half. I used an adjustable set-square to help measure out the 5" from each side.

And here's the 2 cut halves. I used a fine tooth blunt hacksaw to painstakingly cut a groove along the line, then used my Exact saw. The Exact saw cut like a hot knife through butter. Sooooo easy and pretty straight too thanks to the groove.

These are the shells before I filled the original lug holes, vent hole and tom mount and before I drilled my new lug holes, tom mount holes and jackhole.

Another photo of the freshly cut shells. My next step is to drill my new lug holes, jack hole and tom mount holes. Then I will paint the inside of the shells black. Painting the inside of the shells black helps cut down on the amount of light reflected around the inside of the shell and helps to reduce the see-throughness of the drum when the heads are fitted.

More to photos to come tomorrow after painting.

Looks like you had fun removing the vent. Good to see I'm not the only one converting terribly made drums. At least yours has a bearing edge.

Frankly...those are the best kind of drums to convert.

                      Great job Kenny.

I'm even ok with the old Pearl style lugs. They'll do in a pinch....ugly to some maybe....but they will do. My Chrome split toms had them and they looked great. Got a lot of compliments on them. The only part that may need replacing, even in the cheaper knock offs, would be the swivel nuts...and they are very inexpensive.

Ha! Just goes to show that everything's 'surface' these days...
A 'shiny surface' is all it takes to make money...., with 'High Quality' products!

You did a good job, Kenny. Looking good so far!
Just out of curiousity: What are the shells made of? Crapwood (tm)?

Umm....probly (EDIT) I meant Mahogany...not birch since it's not very expensive. It's the ply, grade and how it's formed is what makes it cheap or not.

I guess I'm not exactly sure what you mean about "Make Money" with a shiny surface and "high quality products" but my toms were all built from scratch and given away free after I wrapped them myself with chrome vinyl.

Kenny started out with Shiny cheap drums. I guess I'm not understanding something.

I think he meant that manufacturers put badly made rubbish in glossy wrap with shiny chrome and it magically becomes a 'quality product' that people will often pay silly money for. In this case I think Kenny had a good idea of what he was going to get though, considering the price.
