  • Cake pans in th UK

    Hi folks

I'm in the middle of building my own custom drums and think I'm going to go down the cake pan route. I believe the rule of thumb for sizing cake pans is to buy a cake pan that is 1" smaller than drum diameter.

Well, I did this and the cake pan didnt even touch the sides of my 10" tom!

Has anyone got a link for a cake pan that would fit my 10" toms that they've bought that definitely works for this trigger system please?

I was looking on ebay but not sure what one to get as thats where I got the last one that was too small.

    cheers
    Kenny

Really....what brand did you use? Are you sure it was a 9" and not an 8"? The brand I use is Fat Daddio's from Ultimate Baker.com(or Cooks dream?)
Not sure if they are available there....but you could compare the photos to whatever you buy if not.

Your pan should rest somewhere on the bearing edge.

I've just started doing my first conversion (of a cheap junior drum set) and being in the UK I had this problem, but I got lucky.

I decided to try converting the 12" snare first, so I bought an 11" PME cake pan from ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PME-3-Deep...item6d7294a661), and when it arrived I found that engraved on the bottom was: "Made for PME Arts & Crafts by Fat Daddio's". It fits near perfectly, I'll post a couple of pictures when I manage to get them off my phone. I haven't tried any other sizes yet - I'm waiting until I finish one drum successfully before I invest in the rest of the parts required.

These pans are 3" deep and the sides of these pans are vertical with no discernible tapering, so it you have protruding hardware inside the shell you might need to drill out some holes/channels to make it fit. My donor shell is quite poor quality (no bearing edges, thin, not entirely round), so I can't guarantee a fit on a 'real' drum.

        Hi Griff,

Thanks for your help with this. Have you finishe your snare yet? It would be really interesting to see how you put it together and what components you used.

        Cheers

I haven't finished it yet, I'm held up by the electronics - the tip on my cheap soldering iron is knackered. I should be able to continue next weekend assuming the replacement arrives this week.

As promised, a few quick pics:

Donor shell, before the snare hardware was removed: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-y...03-27+18.30.56
How it fits (my shell isn't round, and has no bearing edges): https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-C...03-27+19.11.00

View from the bottom of the pan showing how much clearance there is: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-d...03-27+19.11.55

I'll try to take a few more photos and make a post about my build later on so you can see the details.

            Hi.

My progress is very slow, but the 10" millenium tom is ready. (2 kids (4 and 6 y) and a wife who planning a trip for the family to Thailand stalls things up)
9" fat daddio in 10" millenium.
            Works as my old Roland.

If you want I can give you some pix from the progress.

              How deep are your shells?

I can tell you just by looking at it...it's 2". 3" will work(if that's all you can find) but you do not need them that deep unless you are going to do a reflection plate build and plan on stuffing the pan with batting.

The millenium is 9 1/2" deep and the cake pan is 2" like Daniel figured.

Its a 10" Millenium that I've cut in half to make x2 toms. I'm selling the lugs and ordered new lugs. I wonder if one of your cake pans would work in my 4.5" cut shell? What do you think?

P.S. I like your CD platform!

The steel toilet sign did I get from a store in Sweden called Jula on sale for 0,2 each. And they already had some super sticky foam tape mounted.
If you prefer a sign for the gentlemen it will cost you 0,5

Cones and piezos from qvarts, But the piezos for the kicks I bought from ELFA in Sweden.
                              Cake pan from http://cooksdream.com/store/round-pa...t-daddios.html

Foam for the base in the toms and the one for killing the tennis feel in the kicks, I got from Special Plast. A Swedish foam company.
They were very nice to me and gave me free samples to try. And I did not need more to finnish the drums
